The Fleet Study Group was a voluntary organisation based in Dorset, UK, that brought together scientists, ecologists and others with an interest in the Fleet Lagoon, Chesil Beach and Hamm Beach (the study area). This area includes the Chesil and Fleet Special area of Conservation (SAC).

The area is very varied with a saline lagoon, a shingle beach, a sandy beach, salt meadows, eel grass beds and a varied underlying geology. The area is located on the coast of central southern Dorset on the south coast of the UK.

Location of study area

The group typically had 15-20 members and met three times a year at a variety of locations around the study area. Membership was by invitation. Visit the About page for more information about the group.

Following the retirement of the long-serving Chairman in April 2025 no one was prepared to take over leading the Group, so the March 2025 meeting proved to be the final meeting of the Group. The option to restart the Group still exists if a new Chairman can be found. A few members of the Group are still working in the study area and stay in touch via WhatsApp. They would welcome any new interest.
